Mr. Robert Richard Gudz, 87, of Gales Ferry, Connecticut passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, Connecticut.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Michael and Anna Olga Fedorwich Gudz. He was a graduate of Alexander Hamilton Technical High School, Brookyln, New York and attended the University of Kansas. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, in the 7th Calvary Regiment (Garryowen) of the 1st Cavalry Division. He spent his career working on the design of US Naval Submarines during the Cold War. He started this work at General Dynamics Electric Boat Division before becoming a Department of the Navy Civilian, where he worked until his retirement as an electrical designer of submarine systems for the Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London, Connecticut and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island.

Robert was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. His hobbies included freshwater and saltwater fishing, lobstering, boating, completing home projects, and volunteering with Meals on Wheels. He had a wood stove that he kept well fed in the winter, and was very active in chopping, splittng and stacking wood, even up to his last winter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rosalie M. Kulas, who passed away on August 25, 2020.

Son, Rodney Gudz and his wife, Kelli of Portsmouth, Rhode Island
Daughter, Renee Mulkey of Clifton Park, New York
Seven Grandchildren, 2 Nieces, and 5 Nephews

Sister, Nancy Preston of Jacksonville, Florida

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 10:00 am from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 127 Stephenson Street, Duryea. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Duryea. A viewing will be held on Thursday morning from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the funeral home.
