Mr. Paul John Komensky, 89, formerly of Duryea, a guest at Pittston Manor, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2014 in Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Taylor.

Born in Duryea, he was the son of the late Paul and Anna Powell Komensky. He was a graduate of Duryea High School, Class of 1943 and Mohawk Valley Community College, Utica, New York. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was the owner of Komensky's Market, Duryea for 40 years.

Prior to its closing, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Pittston. He was currently a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 585, Duryea and the V.F.W. Post 1227, Duryea. He was a member of the John F. Kennedy Knights of Columbus, Council 372, Pittston and past faithful navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly 948.

He was life long member and former fire chief of Germania Hose Company, Duryea. He was a member and former secretary of the Mutual Aid Association of Greater Pittston. He was one of the founding members of the Duryea Ambulance and a member of the PA State Fire Police Association.

He played sax for the Eversharpes Band for 30 years. He was also an organizer of the Germania Novelty Band.

He was proceeded in death by his wife the former Helen Claire Schneck, who passed away on January 16, 2005, brother, Joseph Komensky and three sisters, Anna Mae Zborovian, Helen Murzenski and Margaret Giles.

Son, Paul Louis Komensky of Pittston Junction
Granddaughter, Teresa Szymanski of Duryea
Nieces and Nephews

Funeral will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 9:30 A.M. from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in Holy Rosary Church, Duryea with Msgr. John Sempa officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Exeter. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The Germania Hose Company, Duryea will pay their respects at 7:00 P.M. The American Legion Post 585, Duryea will conduct military services at 7:30 P.M. The V.F.W.
