Mr. Michael G. Matiko, 82, of Duryea, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 4, 1941, he was the son of the late Verna and Michael Martin Matiko. Mike was a graduate of Duryea High School, Class of 1959 where he was active in basketball, baseball and football. Upon graduating he entered the United States Air Force serving a four year term stationed in Texas, Louisiana, Azores, England and Spain. Following his discharge he was employed by Trans World Airlines at John F. Kennedy International Airport and later by American Airlines at Liberty International Airport, Newark, New Jersey.
Mike was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. He was a member and president of Lodge 187 Polish National Alliance, Duryea served two terms as a commissioner of the Polish National Alliance District VII Northern Pennsylvania.
He enjoyed traveling with his family visiting many US States and Territories , Mexico, Europe, Bahamas, Hawaii, Thailand with two great trips back to JFK to meet his son, Jason, the other to Thailand meeting his son, Jeffrey.
Mike enjoyed playing golf, winning several tournaments while employed by TWA, watching all the sports on TV and traveling to New York State to play bingo and visit the local casino.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Carole Ann Swenton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 10:30 am in Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 127 Stephenson Street, Duryea with the Rev. Paul McDonnell officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Duryea. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 East Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are by the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea.
