Mr. Joseph V. Yonushka (Nicky), 98, of Duryea, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, September 1, 2022, in the Hospice Unit at the VA Hospital in Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Duryea, he was the son of the late Anthony and Julia Lazevnick Yonushka. He was a graduate of Duryea High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country aboard the USS Princeton stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Duryea, where he married Elizabeth Miller.

He received his bachelor degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University. He attained his Master's Degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He started and finished his career at RCA in Mountain Top. He was a pioneer in developing semiconductors.

After retirement, he and Betty traveled the World. He enjoyed weekends at his summer home on the Susquehanna River and many trips to Atlantic City.

He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1227, Duryea.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his his wife, the former Elizabeth (Betty) Miller, who passed away on November 17, 2016, his son, Joseph, who passed away on August 28, 1976, his daughter, Julianne Yonushka, who passed away on February 14, 1991, brothers, Albert and John and sisters, Jean Kovalan and Marie Yonushka.

Surviving are:
Son, Vincent Yonushka and his wife, Rose of Duryea
Grandson, Kristopher Yonushka and his wife, Alana DeMinico
Granddaughter, Brianna Zavislak and her husband, Mark
Great grandchildren:
Nando and Mario Yonushka
Riley and Bria Zavislak

Many nieces and nephews who would always visit and send cards.

The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Guy Fasciana for many years of caring for Nicky, to the staff at Compassionate Care, to his caregivers Sandy, Anita and Sally and to the entire staff at Home Instead Senior Care. Thank you to Dr. Kolvin, Jennifer and the entire staff of the Hospice at the VA. All treated him with kindness, compassion, respect and dignity.

Funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 9:30 am from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea with the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Holy Rosary Church, 127 Stephenson Street, Duryea with the Rev. Michael Bryant officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Duryea. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
