Mr. James W. Carey, 86, of Duryea, passed away peacefully into God's arms on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Taylor.

Born in Exeter, he was the son of the late James F. and Katherine Carey. He was a graduate of Exeter High School. James joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country proudly for 23 years. During his service, he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton, Okinawa and Vietnam. He retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of First Sergeant.

James married his true love Doris "Cookie" Carey in 1953. They were married for 59 years until her passing in 2012. Together they raised six children, who graced them with fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Upon retiring from the Marine Corp., James settled in Duryea with his family. He began working at Schott Optical Glass Company, Duryea where he worked as a welder until his retirement. He also served as President for Schott's Credit Union.

James was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Duryea. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1227, Duryea and the Americam Legion Post 585, Duryea.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was known for his constant whistling, especially when working in his workshop or out in his yard.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.

Daughter, Linda Patterson and her husband, David, of Hughestown
Daughter, Phylis Hubert and her husband, Thomas, of MA
Daughter, Mary Nunes and her companion, Michael Pucilowski, of Old Forge
Daughter, Diane Bowmaster and her husband, Michael, of Harrisburg
Son, Jamie Carey of Kingston

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at 10:00 am in Holy Rosary Church, Duryea. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Duryea. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of the funeral. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. I grew up next door to Mr. Carey and he was always like a grandfather to me. He made a positive impact on my life in many ways that will stay with me forever. He will be greatly missed.
