Barbarevech

Christopher Anthony Barbarevech MD, 58, of Moosic, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024 surrounded by his loving family at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Duryea, Christopher was the son of the late Raymond and Marie (Capone) Barbarevech.

He graduated Seton Catholic High School in Pittston, where he met his wife of 34 years, the former Teresa Costantino. Christopher graduated the University of Scranton for his undergrad with a major in Biology and went on to graduate Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, for his MD, residency, and fellowship.

Upon graduation, he moved his family back to Moosic, and began his career as a gastroenterologist, which he practiced with compassion and diligence. Christopher was a partner of G.I. Consultants in Scranton, PA, where he practiced up until his cancer diagnosis.

In his personal life, Christopher had many interests and hobbies. He was a member of the Freemasons, an avid wine collector, co-president of the Westmorland Club’s Wine Affinity Club, an ardent lover of the fine arts and member of the Board of Directors for the Broadway Theater League of the Scranton Cultural Center, and a fine food enthusiast. One of his biggest passions, however, was traveling with his wife and family.

On top of these many hobbies, Christopher was an advocate for many charities, up to and including being a founding member of the Westmorland Club Charitable Foundation scholarship fund.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father and mother in law, Frank and Emilene (Sicilio) Costantino.

Christopher had a personality bigger than life and made family out of friends wherever he went and his generosity knew no bounds. He is survived by his wife Teresa, his eldest daughter Dr. Kristiana Barbarevech, his youngest daughter Karissa Barbarevech and wife Shaelyn, his first grandchild, Brian Christopher, and his loving furry companion, Lucky all of Moosic.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Lisa Thomas, Nicole Francis, PA-C, and the entire staff of Hematology and Oncology Associates of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Dr. Samir Pancholy, and the entire staff of Geisinger Community Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you send donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagertown, MD 21741. I met Dr, B when I went to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation with my sister and boyfriend at the time. I was so nervous to learn what was going on with me. He was so sweet and kind and gave up his time to help everyone in the group. He told me to meet him after the meeting. I told him what I was scared about and all my issues. He said call for an appointment and I will take you as a patient. That was so many years ago. He has been my doctor ever since. I am broken hearted, My Deepest condolences to his family and friends and patients and his staff that he worked with. God Bless you Dr. Barbarevech you were the Best. He was so kind and caring that My Husband started to go to him. He is deeply missed.

The community has lost a wonderful doctor and caring person. He is credited with saving my son and healing him over 30 years ago. Dr. B also saved my life 17 years ago. His diagnostic skills and forward thinking found an Adenocarcinoma. A great and compassionate Dr. will be missed by all.

Fran Jud RN, and family (12 days ago)

The community has lost a wonderful and caring Dr. and person! First, he has to be credited with saving and healing my son over 30 years ago; he always refers to him for his excellent and compassionate care. Then 17 years ago, he saved my life! Literally! His incredible gift of diagnosing and treating resulted in my being one of the first patients in this area to swallow the endoscopic camera which stopped on a hidden lesion. The device stopped on what was later,(surgically) found to be an Adenocarcinoma of the small intestine. The discovery, removal surgery and a year of aggressive chemotherapy saved my life! Dr. B was there for my endless questions and even last summer helped me through a rough period. So sorry for this huge loss of a great doctor and person.

Fran Jud RN, and family (12 days ago)

Dear Family, I am so sorry to read of Doctor's passing. He is a fine fellow and a great doctor. I was his patient years ago and treated with him on several occasions at the former St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale. His concern and level of care were second to none. My sympathy to his family. I wish you all peace.

I was lucky enough to meet Chris and Teresa on Clinton Street in 1996 while Chris was in his GI fellowship. While our daughters were newborns and toddlers they played together and gave me the chance to learn about being a parent. Chris and Teresa introduced Kaitlyn to pasta which remains her favorite food! Their friendship, support and loving family have impacted myself and girls ever since. We are better people from knowing Chris and I am beyond saddened by his loss. Wishing you vivid memories of his fantastic smile, laugh and zest for all things good and happy. Love to you all.
