Mrs. Doris M. Cool, 86, of Duryea, passed away in the Inpatient Unit of Celtic Hospice at Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre, on July 24, 2018.

She was born in 1932 in Duryea, daughter of the late Andrew and Sophie (Parzych) Swierczenski. She was educated in Duryea schools and graduated in 1949 from Duryea High School. Following positions in the local garment and retail industries, she enlisted in the US Army and proudly served her country in Fort Lee, VA, Fort Sam Houston, TX, and Fort Belvoir, VA. She also worked at the former Pittston Hospital, TOPPS Chewing Gum, and Tobyhanna Army Depot, from which she retired in 1990. Doris loved spending time with her grandchildren. She liked to crochet and made many afghan sets for family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Kojtek and her brother, Joseph Swierczenski.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Andrea Cool, with whom she resided, and Susan Fitch, and her husband, Kenneth Messner, of Falls Church, VA. Also surviving are her three beloved granddaughters, Erin Larson and her husband, Joshua, of Lacey, WA; Kelly Fannin and her husband, Joshua, of Parris Island, SC; and Captain Breslin Fitch of Fort Belvoir, VA; and great-grandchildren, Sophie, Evan and Amelia Larson, and Zoe and Penelope Fannin. Other surviving family members include her sister, Mildred Halterman of Macon, GA and several nieces and nephews. Doris was also the grandmother to “Best Puppy” Miss Lucy.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main Street, Duryea.   A private graveside remembrance ceremony will be held by the family. Doris was a wonderful neighbor and friend throughout my childhood and in my adulthood. She welcomed you with open arms when you stopped in to visit. She was a loving, generous woman. I will miss her and think of her often.
